Annotation

This paper explores how a cupped hand behind the ear functions as other-initiation of repair in an English L2 classroom, typically emerges when speech is lacking, and is linked to deficient recipient speaker orientation in the course of trouble source turns. When repair initiation is achieved by combined speech-gesture, the speech explicitly points out the trouble is not a hearing difficulty.
