Volunteers are shown to use conversational practices of agreeing and affiliating with troubles-teller’s stance and displaying grasp of the nature of their bad experiences, thus exhibiting empathy with others’ very upsetting experiences of life-changing events (in this case the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake, tsunami and linked Fukushima nuclear power plant calamity).
