L. presents a theory of the metaphorical build-up of deviant sentences. First he analyzes the concept of deviance from a pragmatic perspective, and from the perspective of deviance in linguistic grammars. On this basis problems of the semantic interpretation of metaphor are investigated; metaphor is considered in the context of poetry, and a concept of metaphoric truth is developed. This theory of metaphor is compared with some alternatives.
