This study employs Van Leeuwen’s legitimation strategies framework, to show how sons of migrant Ecuadorian parents living in Spain render and defend familial talk of sacrifice and weal, whilst concurrently narrating deprivation and hardship, thus internalizing and/or defying the legitimation discourse.
