This paper proposes a theoretically based and empirically deduced taxonomy of (172 audio-recorded) individual responses (IR) to two real stories of race-grounded social suffering by LA university students. The IR's, replies in an identity negotiation process, can promote either recovery or intensified individual and community distress.
