Annotation

Considerations on the semantics of socially deictic items such as honorifics, titles of address, second person pronominal alternates and associated verb agreements, and the like. L. concludes that an adequate account will require recalling the notion of conventional implicature from the inappropriate uses to which it has been put (as, e.g., by L. Karttunen and S.Peters (1975:'Conventional implicature in Montague grammar')). He also discusses the borderlines between semantics and pragmatics, and between pragmatics and sociolinguistics.
