This paper reviews the novelties and influence of W.Labov's founding New York study on variationist sociolinguistics, and ensuing evolutions of the field. It considers various strands of Labov's sociolinguistics' contribution: language style, individual language, African American English, linguistic evaluation, methodological innovation, and language change. It also treats Labov's commitment to language in society research.
