This article tracks some divergent sociolinguistic positioning regarding vernacularity. It considers how large-scale (UK) social class experience shifts may change the foundations on which vernacular language has been determined and studied. It reviews vernacularisation as sociolinguistic shift opposing the better-established linguistic standardisation process.
