This article examines the aims and underpinning questions molding the MO's that Labov innovated for (1) compiling amounts of daily speech, (2) scientifically treating language use variation, and (3) interdisciplinary thinking. Labov's work also added to the establishment of a well-defined sociolinguistic community of practice.
