Annotation

Labov's empirical neogrammarian postulate defense, his functionalist sound change explanation critique, and formal maxims ruling vowel shifts, mergers and splits are key contributions towards solving historical phonology's restriction problem. Their impact on phonological theory is explored, and they appear interlinked with novel Optimality Theory developments in mutually explanatory ways.
