This paper distinguishes two totally distinct readings of the Labovian variationist sociolinguistics-Chomskyan theoretical linguistics link: as addition or alternative. It is sketched what could be a Labovian materialist alternative to Chomskyan idealism. This requires a wider sociolinguistics definition than merely variationism and asks for linguistic disciplines' internal integration, and external integration of the language sciences with evolutionary psychology, anthropology and social history.
