This paper surveys Labov's contributions to African American Vernacular English (AAVE)'s traits, verbal artistry, use, and (later) evolution, and to how linguistics could serve to enhance reading instruction for vernacular English speakers and colored people's life chances. This notably enhanced his entire contribution to theoretical, methodological and applied sociolinguistic facets and research on language variation and change.
