Labov's Atlas of North American English (ANAE), reviewing vocalic variation in NAE, with a rather modern focus and notable dialectology improvement, will guide future geographical variation and vowel shifting research. Sound changes, for English as for other languages, must now be considered integrated system elements. Geographical reviews should hereafter reckon with these systems' scope.
