Every pure quotation theory somehow instinctively covers the evident assertion that pure quotations address their cited expressions, yet stay hazy on the latter's nature. This article suggests to take seriously that cited items are semantic (not syntactic) objects, and to thereout elaborate a pure quotation semantics that preserves the essential intuitions and concurrently evades standard problems.
