Annotation

The ten distinct meanings Flemish people accord to the label ‘strangers’ (S) can be sorted into four major groups as to criterion content (race, culture, nationality, no answer or refusal) and two ways as to criterion use (description as ‘them’ versus ‘not us’). S of Muslim descent mention the highest prejudice levels. The group linked to the S label differs by respondents' socio-demographic backdrop.
