Examples of respectful politeness in Hittite state correspondence (1450-1190 B.C.) are affected by interactants' relative and absolute social status and by general and socially required care for the addressee’s face. Instances of actual strategic politeness may be discerned in symmetric relations in which the writer attempts to reduce a possibly face-threatening act and in a few letters addressed to the Hittite king.
