Annotation

Goffman's analytical categories are used to interpret Telemachus' polite, very formal, ritual reception of the goddess Athena, masked as the aged unco Mentes, in Ithaca's royal palace. This welcoming observes an orderly, multi-step pattern, exacting high householder-guest collaboration levels, honoring interpersonal social expectations and conduct norms imposed by the actual social situation itself.
