Annotation

Teen Cantonese English learners' refusal style as to strategy use, pattern, order, and content and their pragmatic competence are collated to adult native Mandarin Chinese (L1) speakers and Chinese English learners as recorded in literature. Refusing rate directly lowers with age and language-acquisition. The indirect-with-specific-reason request refusal style tallies with the indirect Chinese communication style of adult native Chinese speakers and English learners. Besides, the direct-then-indirect L2 refusal evolution equals that of L2 requests of young Cantonese English learners, and some L1 pragmatic transfer signs exist.
