L2 learners identify unfamiliar idioms containing familiar words to a notably lesser extent than unfamiliar words and definitions of idioms marked as familiar are far less admissible than those of thus marked words. L2 learners’ enhanced awareness of these idioms' general presence in language is vital to their permanent acquisition.
