Annotation

This study explains how linguistic ethnography can uncase the stratified processes that clash in the breaking of classroom silence, displaying how linguistic form and practice, individual position, local institutional history and national education policy growth all matter, and it debates the worth of situated interactional data for teacher education. It proposes two case studies, covering a Turkish language class in a Greek-Cypriot secondary school, and a debate on Standard English in an inner London comprehensive school.
