Annotation

Theorizing queer identity and culture values crossing, this paper explores Chinese gay men’s coming-out experiences via a narrative analysis of 60 online self-reported stories. Usual Chinese cultural values like family, marriage, and duty affect Chinese gay men’s decision to come out, their communication orientations, and the outcomes of their coming out. Confident assimilation and (non)confident accommodation are the most employed communication orientations. This paper contributes to co-cultural theory by showing that social relationship types influence taken communication orientations, leastwise in the Chinese context.
