Annotation

This article tries to establish whether Kuching's minority Tamil immigrant community still upholds its heritage culture or whether it has assimilated with ruling Sarawak cultures. Data stem from a range of questionnaires exploring language, social and cultural identity, and unstructured interviews covering three generations. Findings demonstrate that, while some assimilation has happened, the community has preserved its cultural identity. The most riveting disclosure is the increscent number of the younger generation who are adjusting their heritage and cultural norms, plainly showing Gibson’s accommodation and acculturation without assimilation.
