Annotation

This paper explores the English ideologies of Korean early study-abroad students’ parents in Gangnam, one of the most wealthy South Korean regions. Outcomes of the critical discourse analysis of data from in-depth individual interviews with 23 parents, demonstrate that the class issue is foregrounded. English is considered an exigency in the Gangnam inner-circle, and their children's native-like English as rendering and passing on parents' high socio-economic class, and as opening doors to high-paying jobs. This study is awaited to launch out the neoliberal English ideologies, especially relative to class, and offer a chance to rethink them from a more critical viewpoint.
