Annotation

This inquiry conducts a framing analysis of the coverage of the biggest inter-religious conflict in Malaysia to date – the “Allah” dispute. Particularly, the inquiry collates the coverage of Chinese-, English-, and Malay-language newspapers and evaluates the factors that entail contrasts in frame building. The findings displayed that these newspapers reported the conflict with diverse intensity and prominence rates, and they used distinct news sources. Albeit conflict seemed to be the main frame used by the dailies, the aspects focused on differed. Sin Chew (Chinese-language daily) was the most vocal in its coverage, which reflected a counter-hegemonic discourse. The Star (English-language daily) employed a moderate approach, while Utusan (Malay-language daily) strongly backed the status quo. The frames built by The Star and Utusan could be credited to the fact that these two newspapers were inclined to minister the politically vested concerns of their owners.
