Annotation

This article uses data from an inquiry on a four-year-old child, Gareth, in his first year of formal schooling in England. The inquiry aspired to distinguish the nature of Gareth's literacy practices across home and school spaces. The article centers on one aspect of Gareth's home digital literacy practices: his frequent home viewings of ‘unboxing’ videos on YouTube. These cover videos that present commercial product unpacking. It is stated that the child viewer/reader is co-constructed in these practices as cyberflâneur and that this way of cultural transmission is an increscent trait of online practices for this age group in the twenty-first century. The article handles matters regarding young children's online practices and their link to material culture before exploring the increase of interest in peer-to-peer textual production and consumption in the digital age.
