Annotation

This paper explores how participants jointly attain projection of prorogations in TV audience interaction in Turkish. Prorogations are lapses in continuing states of incipient talk (CSIT) when the participants are not just talking but busy in another activity. Prorogations during CSIT are neither imputable silences nor are they handled as responsible by the participants. Assuming the ethnomethodological device of conversation analysis, the paper discloses two types of episodes of talk in TV audience interaction: (1) adjacency pairs and (2) extended sequences. In adjacency pairs, a prorogation is projected via lack of reciprocal gaze and presenting minimal consensus. In extended sequences, however, gaze disgust and evincible erection of reciprocal adjustment (e.g. employing proverbial expression) are used by the participants to retain the transition relevance place and project prorogations.
