Annotation

Starting from the perspective that genres are directive as well as constitutive of social action, this paper examines the interconnection of genres and Discourses that transit generic limits. Positioning the inquiry in a local energy transition project in Denmark and examining what occurs in a range of citizen meetings without a closely determined agenda, it is asserted that the meetings may be seen as a nexus of genres formed by a tissue of entwined Discourses with a lifespan that expands beyond the particular communicative moment. The paper grasps a nexus of genres as a point where genres in a broader sense assemble and interact. Linking the Discourses started by the participating citizens to the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual metafunctions in systemic functional linguistics, this paper examines themes made notable by actors partaking in the citizen meetings. By following these themes intertextually across generic boundaries, the paper distinguishes Discourses that are reciprocally intertwined and genres that are taken up in the process. These cover anticipatory Discourse, Discourse of legitimation, Discourse of motivation, Discourse about technology and Discourse about energy saving initiatives or in other words Discourses that surpass the limits of the particular genre in which they are accomplished.
