Annotation

This article explores mother–child book-reading interactions in diverse socioeconomic (cfr. upper-middle and low-income) classes in Taiwan. Upper middle class mothers were inclined to incite children to narrate the story, ask open-ended questions, and debate nonimmediate information, whereas low-income mothers tended to consider book reading as their liability and wanted their children to be perceptive. Educational implications and further research propositions were reviewed.
