Annotation

This article investigates the functioning of deception in multi-party interactions, a topic formerly barely explored by deception philosophers. Deception is here debated using a neo-Goffmanian classification of (un)ratified hearers and a neo-Gricean version of speaker meaning, anchored in non-reflexive intentionality and responsibility, which is demonstrated to act beyond the speaker-hearer dyad. The intricate mechanisms of deception concerning different hearers are elucidated with examples selected from the American television series “House.” Deception in fictional interactions exemplifies real-life deception manifestations, but it also illuminates those rare ones, which are the focus of philosophical attention.
