Annotation

This article interprets prosocial lies as a special pragmatic category of a lie. In order to investigate this category, university students were given 10 vignettes comprising prosocial lies and demanded (employing a Likert Scale) whether they deemed each target statement to be a lie, a polite remark, and an act serving the speaker and/or the hearer. The outcomes demonstrate that prosocial lies are evaluated as real lies. Moreover, the article provides support for various categories of prosocial lies.
