Annotation

It is claimed by “deceptionists” that bald-faced lies are either no proper lies or linked to an aim to mislead. This article presents a questionnaire study in which participants were demanded whether target expressions in eight cases of presumed bald-faced lies were (i) lies, (ii) deceitful, and (iii) audacious. In general, bald-faced lies were considered as lies and as deceitful. With regard to boldness, participants explicitly distinguished between bold and non-bold expressions. This demonstrates that the level of boldness is a significant attribute of bald-faced lies.
