Annotation

This article contains two parts. The first part enlarges the conventional definition of lying to illocutionary acts performed through explicit performatives, centering on promising. The second part confirms the suitability of the presented definition of lying by promising after testing it against common language speakers' instincts. Also, these outcomes defy the following required stipulations for telling a lie with content p: that you have to vindicate p directly; that you have to be convinced that p be untrue; that p must be untrue; that you must try to mislead the addressee into opining that p.
