Annotation

This study examines the (type of) English impact on the Spanish of two Spanish-language presses available in Charleston, South Carolina, at various linguistic levels in the two distinct writing styles of articles and advertisements. The data were collected from one edition of each of the presses. The English impact appears comparable to the findings of earlier studies in larger cities with greater Hispanic populations. In addition, the findings disclose parallels with studies on language acquisition and loss in a contact situation and studies on bilingualism of second language learners and heritage speakers. Moreover, the findings propose social effects on language in a contact situation at the shifting linguistic levels.
