Annotation

This article focuses on the culinary vocabulary borrowed from French in the 19th century. It offers an analysis of the sense developments of the diverse borrowings from their oldest recorded uses in English to the present day in comparison with their French equivalents. It will be riveting to discover whether a) a specific meaning a borrowing receives after its adoption is taken over from French (given the lasting effect of French on English) or b) whether it renders an autonomous semantic shift within English. Such a detailed inquiry of the semantics of the culinary words of French origin was still lacking in existing studies.
