Annotation

In Iran, online intimacy is generally attained via reciprocal visual and textual self-disclosure, which in turn may engender face-to-face encounters. For Muslim Iranian women, social media provide space for self-expression, a way to oppose solitude and produce significant relationships with congenial people. Yet they also face a series of risks linked to social media interaction in Iran, like censorship, online (sexual) harassment, or cybercrime. Based on in-depth interviews and participant observation with Muslim Iranian women in Tehran, this paper examines the degree to which social media platforms (blogs, Facebook and dating sites) have engendered both challenges and chances for them by remodeling the ways in which they produce and preserve intimate (online) relationships.
