Annotation

Using the socio-cognitive frame, this paper explores the role of metapragmatic expressions (MPEs) in engendering common ground (CG) in BELF meeting interactions. Data from one business meeting drawn from the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English, disclose that the speakers chiefly use four MPEs types, i.e. evidentials, message glosses, commentaries, and speech-action descriptions, as pre-emptive or corrective strategies when they are aware of eventual or actual interactional problems or difficulties.
