Annotation

This paper explores the development of “manner-of-speaking markers” (MSMs) and beholds how grammaticalization, pragmaticalization and lexicalization interact in such evolution. The evolution of the markers is accompanied by changes in their syntactic conduct, semantic property and pragmatic function, and the changes are produced by the interaction among the three processes. Grammaticalization and lexicalization specific to MSMs are steered by pragmatic considerations, therefore pragmatically motivated. A comparison between English and Chinese MSMs in lexicalization displays that morphological typology plays an important role in MSMs lexicalization.
