This study found that additions and expansions were significantly more frequent in video-mediated remote interpreting (RI), and that their frequency grew further after a familiarisation and training phase for the participating interpreters, calling for a qualitative inspection of the motives and functions of the additions and expansions. This study needs a fit methodology. Micro-analytical approaches like Conversation Analysis constitute a good alternative to unsystematic and incomplete introspective data (providing insights into interpreting processes and the motivations directing interpreter's choices), notably when enriched with social macro-variables. This article examines the nature of additions and expansions in RI, notably to what degree they are indicatory of interpreting problems, to what extent they are particular to the videoconference situation, what they disclose about, and how they impact the interpreter's RI participation. It also assesses the micro-analytical approach chosen for this inquiry.
