This inquiry explores how nurses working at a Japanese geriatric healthcare facility account, validate and rebuild information regarding care receivers during routine handover encounters. Via a sequential and multimodal assay of the video-recorded handovers, the inquiry examines how the participants handle the complex balance between their duty to support the precision of records and their orientation toward respective situated identities as reporters and report recipients, by tactfully employing linguistic and other semiotic resources. The essay shows how the participants include different evidential markers as a resource to propose various access kinds and levels they have to specific pieces of information and to declare their epistemic stance.
