Speakers of Máíhĩki (Tukanoan, Peru) use assertive questions as the conventional ways for various grammatical and interactional aims. It is demonstrated that the class of actions done by assertive questions in this language is uniquely marked by the presence of a menace to the speaker's positive face. Crucially, the facework features of assertive questions derive from their preference structure, not from their syntax.
