Annotation

The abundant Internet-based debates on 'Je (ne) suis (pas) Charlie' provide a wealth of evaluative data which can be examined employing the methods and procedures of current politeness theorisation. This article chiefly aims at exploring how (im)politeness judgments are made within a specific Internet discussion forum by the commenters themselves vis-à-vis the perspectives and the identities they adopt. Devised within the framework of ‘politeness as social practice’, the article tries to read the commenters’ identities and the respective ‘moral orders’ to which they appear to orient themselves when making their judgments. It is argued that these (im)politeness judgments as manifestations of their metapragmatic awareness can be employed as a venue for the inquiry of how individual, group-based and societal value systems are negotiated, disputed and confirmed within computer-mediated communication environs.
