Conversation analytic techniques are employed to better grasp the interactional abilities of two year old children. Using audio–video recordings of mother–child interactions, this inquiry explores laughter by young children after questions by the child's mother. Potential bases for young children employing laughter after a question are the child's incapacity to respond to a question in full, and their reluctance to do so. The concerned two year old children are making the transition from the single to multiword stage. All participants are native English speakers and speak English throughout the recordings.
