Annotation

In Anglicism inquiry, the focus has recently moved to their pragmatic and social discourse function. This interactional assay of the use of English insertions in one season of the Dutch reality TV show Expeditie Robinson centers on the three participants that employ English most frequently on the island. It is displayed how two of these participants constitute an ingroup with its own discursive norms, covering the frequent use of English items. Next, the assay centers on an interesting opposite: another participant who also employs English regularly, but who does not achieve any sizable social prestige on the island. The two contrasting cases elucidate the locally rising and very fluid nature of the social meaning of English components in the unprompted conversations of these Dutch-speaking interlocutors.
