Annotation

This paper examines co-occurrence patterns and register variation of metadiscourse markers in spoken language. Using a modified reflexive model of metadiscourse, the paper employs multidimensional analysis and a corpus of 126 spoken texts to extract spoken metadiscourse dimensions and study metadiscourse variation across scripted speeches, unscripted speeches, discussion broadcasts, nondiscussion broadcasts, public conversations and casual conversations. Three spoken metadiscourse dimensions appearing from a factor analysis were labelled “two-way communication”, “united organization” and “discourse presentation”. Quantitative and qualitative assays of these dimensions disclosed clear register variation of metadiscourse across spoken registers. Dialogues more often than monologues and institutional discourse more often than mundane discourse assume metadiscourse markers to underscore interaction, seek cooperation and propose discourse. The paper adds to a fuller grasp of metadiscourse in spoken language and to computer-assisted metadiscourse inquiry.
