Annotation

This paper assays how speakers of an autochthonous heritage language (AHL) make use of digital media, via the example of Low German, a regional language employed by a declining number of speakers chiefly in northern Germany. The focus of the assay is on Web 2.0 and its interactive potential for individual speakers. The paper therefore explores linguistic practices on the social network site Facebook, with particular stress on language choice, bilingual practices and writing in Low German. The findings propose that social network sites like Facebook have the potential to supply new mediatised spaces for speakers of an AHL that can incite sociolinguistic change.
