This introduction reviews the normative literature on language policy and planning. Specifically, its goal is three-fold. It first elucidates how normative political theory contributes to long-standing discussions concerning language and linguistic diversity. Second, it examines some of the significant trends within this normative literature as well as its fault lines. And lastly, it debates the chief contributions of each article that covers this special issue.
