Annotation

This paper revises the prospects for the xenogamy of conversation analytic (CA) and neurocognitive studies of conversation, centering on turn taking. Though conversation is the main ecological niche for language use, rather little brain research has centered on interactive language use, partly given the challenges of employing brain-imaging methods that are controlled enough to execute sound experiments yet still reflect the rich and spontaneous nature of conversation. Recently, though, brain researchers have begun to explore conversational phenomena, for example, by employing “overhearer” or controlled interaction paradigms. This paper surveys neuroimaging studies linked to turn-taking and sequence organization, phenomena historically recounted by CA. These studies, for example, display early action recognition and immediate planning of responses midway during an incoming turn. The survey debates studies with an eye to a prolific swap between CA and neuroimaging research on conversation and an indication of how these disciplines can gain from each other.
