Uyghur, a Turkic language spoken mainly in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, is currently undergoing changes in usage. The spread of Standard Chinese fostered by the national government and the growing Han population are adding to the Sinicization of Uyghur and molding new language practices. Language-linked issues are therefore a usual topic in the Uyghur community. This paper assays an Uyghur comedy sketch entitled Chüshenmidim, ‘I don’t understand’, whose chief theme is the Sinicization of the Uyghur language. The assay centers on parts of the sketch that disclose Uyghurs’ attitudes towards the rising code-switching, Chinese loanword use, and the value of the mother tongue for identity formation.
