Efficient communication is one of the most basic aspects of effective patient care, and it often depends on the nurses’ capacity to empathize with patients while finding efficient ways to translate medical science into personally pertinent health information. This paper uses the model of message design logics to assess what strategies nursing students (N = 343) employed to voice empathy during a simulated health history training, and to point out the contrasts in linguistic choices in simulated patient–nurse conversations.
