Annotation

This inquiry explored how adult attachment patterns affect communication to acquaintances with cancer diagnoses. Adults completed Brennan et al.’s measures of attachment anxiety and avoidance, then reported their likelihood of expressing diverse comments to a lately diagnosed acquaintance. Anxiety forecasted expressions of admiration, sharing cancer exemplars, and questions about the cancer (i.e., all possibly intimacy-increasing), as well as advice (i.e., attempted caregiving). Avoidance forecasted aversion to asking questions or presenting help. These findings provide insight into nonintimates’ efforts at support.
